Macquarie's Global Leadership Symposium Series offers the opportunity to gain genuine insight into a leadership and diplomacy, culture, economics, society and politics in a city and region of the world, which you can then apply to your own field of study, professional or personal life.

On our Domestic Symposium to Canberra

Through a range of briefings with diplomats, academics and professionals, you will gain firsthand insight into the political, historical and cultural identity of Australia. The Symposium consolidates the overarching themes of leadership, international awareness and development of professional skills, and provides you with unparalleled, firsthand insight into the very heart of Australia's historic, democratic and diplomatic core.

The Session 1, 2016 Domestic Symposium to Canberra will include;

  • An exclusive briefing and lunch at the private residence of the High Commissioner of Pakistan, Her Excellency Ms Naela Chohan;
  • A private briefing on Australia-UK relations at the High Commission of the United Kingdom;
  • A meeting with staff from Companion House, a not-for-profit organisation that assists victims of torture and trauma;
  • Insights into political reporting through a briefing with journalists from the ABC Parliament House Bureau;
  • A briefing on Australia's Aboriginal heritage, traditions and culture;
  • Cultural visits to significant Australian landmarks including the National Museum of Australia, Questacon and the National Gallery of Australia; and
  • A behind the scenes conservation tour at the National Zoo of Australia.

On our International Symposium to Brazil (and formerly Turkey, Singapore and Thailand)

The Global Leadership Symposium - International is a 2 week international trip, held in the mid-Session break in April and/or September. It is an opportunity to further your international knowledge about aspects of leadership, culture, politics, human rights, international relations and business. Hear from global and community leaders at NGOs, corporations and embassies, explore the historical and cultural sites and participate in cooking classes, walking tours and lectures at local universities.

On last year's Symposium to Brazil delegates;

  • Furthered their understanding of Australia-Brazil relations at a briefing at the Australian Embassy in Brazil's capital, Brasília;
  • Learnt Capoeira, a mix of dance and martial arts developed by African slaves during the colonisation of Brazil, in Salvador;
  • Heard from community leaders, who are leading a strong resistance movement to fight the eviction and demolishment of communities to build infrastructure for this year's Olympic Games;
  • Debated foreign and economic policy at the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) Policy Centre in Rio de Janeiro;
  • Were inspired by young entrepreneurs who are advocating for greater Afro-Brazilian participation in Brazilian media and conversations on human rights and social inequality;
  • Discovered the economy, culture and housing of one of Rio de Janeiro's Favelas (slums) on a walking tour led by local guides;
  • Feasted on Brazilian BBQ and danced at Rio Scenarium, one of the top 10 bars in the world! (According to The Guardian).
